Chao was a Research Fellow at the Centre at the University of Adelaide. He received his PhD at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2016. During the fall of 2013 to the fall of 2015, he studied at the University of California at Merced as a joint-training PhD student. He received his B. E. and M. E. degrees from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in 2008 and 2011 respectively.

Chao’s research interests are mainly in computer vision including video processing problems, such as visual object tracking and instance-level video segmentation. Other interests include visual question answering, single-image super-resolution and sketch image retrieval.

At the end of 2018, Chao left Australia and the Centre to take up a position as Assistant Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.
